project description

For the 2013 Ed Bacon Student Design Competition: “INTERSECT: When Transportation Corridors and Cities Collide,” perf(a)rmance landsc(r)ape(r) examined the intersection of transportation and food and the latent potential of creating a nexus of the two to increase urban sustainability. On the edge of the Schuykill River in Philadelphia, PA, the proposal grafts the program of food production and distribution onto the transportation network. Through the melding of the two, the project seeks to maximize the potential for urban food production and education while limiting the carbon emission in the city.

The heart of the project lies in the food cooperative connected to the 30th street station via tunnels. The nine-story building contains housing, community kitchens, classrooms, a market, cold storage, and a seed archive. Each of the programs service the goal of pollenating knowledge of sustainable food production and distribution practices. Along the existing industrial rail-yard, remediation techniques were used to reinvigorate this landscape into an urban farm, pollenated by an apiary located atop the 30th street station. The waste generated from the agricultural production was then used to create bio-fuel, powering the series of buildings. The programs each work together to create a productive landscape that generates food, energy, and agency within the community to collaborate around food.
